Myself and my little family of Moto GP fanatics are still heartbroken by the sad news that Marco 'Super Sic' Simoncelli has sadly been taken from this world in a motorbike accident.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Marco. Ive no doubt in my heart that you were set to be our champion again and you will be sorely missed by all your fans. You were a true character in the paddock and stole all our hearts with a single smile.

A beautiful man, now a beautiful angel.

RIP Marco 'Super Sic' Simoncelli

God saw that you were hurting
And it was not meant to be,
So he put his arms around you
And whispered,''come to me''.
With tearful eyes we watched you
And saw you pass away,
Although we loved you dearly
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
Hard working hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best

almost extreme couponing....

I have really gotten into this programme. I find it fascinating that these (often) women dedicate so much time to finding, clipping, organising coupons and then looking at sales etc to best plan their use.

I have found a fantastic little group on facebook which has taken this idea on but in the UK and have had some good results so far. Its definitely turned me round to the idea of couponing better.

Myself and a friend, Denise, have both taken up this new challenge. We are both in similiar circumstances and our baby girls Holly and her daughter Lexi are two weeks apart in age.
We have both enjoyed the 'buzz' that getting to a till with a bundle of coupons to help for your shopping and seeing how little you pay can get you.

My first attempt I was very nervous. I had just discovered the group and they had pointed me in the direction of a Honey Shreddies £1 off voucher and then informed me it was on offer in Tesco for......you guessed it.........£1.
So I printed off 9 (we eat a lot of cereal and some for my newly single sister in law) and off I went with Ben in tow as my helper.
We grabbed our 9 boxes and made our way to the till.

The assistant couldnt believe it.

I was amazed.

I came away with several bargains that day and now dont shop with some unless I've checked my coupons, checked the site etc.

These were my bargains for the day

It includes

9 boxes of honey shreddies
4 x Dettol Surface Cleanser
2 boxes of Oats So Simple sachets
4 x 9 toilet rolls
4 x I cant believe its not butter
4 x pampers wipes

Costs should of been
9 Honey Shreddies ~ £9. I had them ALL FREE
4 Dettol ~ £4 (£1 each). I had a 50p off an item coupon so cost me £2
2 Oats so Simple ~ £3. (£1.50 each). I had 50p off an item so £2
Toilet Roll were £1.99 and scanned due to mispricing on BOGOF. So I had them for £3.98 but with a £3.50 Tesco coupon they cost me 48p.
Pampers should of been 99p each. I had 2 x £2 pampers vouchers so they made me 4p.

Total before coupons - £23.94
Total after coupons - £4.48

TOTAL SAVING - £19.46

Most definitely worth it.

Getting there slowly.......

Well it has been 2 and a half months since I was last on my blog. How very naughty of me........

well let me firstly apologise and secondly bring you up to speed a bit.

*************************************************************************************

The house is now finally becoming a home.

Holly's (who is now almost 15 months old) room is decorated. Its currently a Winnie The Pooh theme. The stickarounds, lampshade, curtains and carpet are from Benjamin's old bedroom, her cot bed is second hand from my sister and so are the chest of draws, also her basket with her toys in was a gift hamper I had when she was born.

Benjamins bedroom is almost finished bar a blind for him. His high rise sleeper was gifted to us by Owens parents (this is Josh's bed), Benjamins bed was gifted to us by Owens friend, the shelves were brought in Focus's closing down sale and we brought the border for his room. Everything else Benjamin already had.

The living room is also looking homely but I think it is missing a rug but so far I'm happy with it. Small but snug and bound to be nice and warm come winter. Only other issue I have is I need to get our curtains and curtain rail back up as the old raul plugs decided to give way so currently no curtains only a net there.

And lastly but not least is a before and after of my dining room.
It did look like this (shamefully!)

It now looks like this
Although fingers crossed most of underneath the white table clothed table is full of bike parts etc and behind the bagged clothes is a tool box. Once Owens shed is finished they will all be outside in the shed along with the pushbike to the right of the picture and Hollys trike. Also the blue box that is hidden behind the door (you can just see it) has moved and made way for............
a 171ltr chest freezer. It has taken 2 x £60 shops to fill it to the brim but Im hoping now its full we can live off that until at least the end of November and then do a big shop to see us through December and January in case the bad weather hits us. Also we do still have our fridge with the small box freezer which I have now filled with bread and inside the chest freezer is 6 x 4pts of milk so we are ok for these as well as an abundance of vegetables and meats etc.

So the house is coming together nicely.

Hello all!!

Well it feels like an eternity since I was last on my blog!!

Well so much has happened since May when I last posted.

Firstly, we've moved house!!!! We were finally awarded a council house and we now reside in a lovely 3 bedroomed house in our beautiful little welsh valley. We are also lucky that we have a lovely big garden so I have decided to set my growing skills to the test as well. Well sort of........
my last growing attempt whilst I lived in my flat was unsuccessful somewhat - all my spring onions were stolen and my neighbours dog ate my tomatos!

I have all this and this to play with!

This is the view down my garden, where you can see Owens workshop foundations are being laid,

the second is the small suntrap near my kitchen window and by my back door
which gets sun all morning and shade from about 12.30-1pm.

I have brought a nice six tiered greenhouse to go against the wall on the left.

I have brought a few seeds packets ready but have decided to research things to grow first and spend the rest of this year working on preparation for my growing instead of jumping straight in.

Should add on the picture down my garden behind the big bush! are a pot of rhubarb that I presumed dead but is now thriving which was 20p in the focus sale and have since discovered there is two crowns in one pot so will get him repotted asap into a giant tub i think.
Also next to him (again behind bush) are two strawberry plants that were 25p each from wilkinsons that were sunlight starved and dying - now have one strawberry that's going red on one of them.
In the suntrap picture the pot is a reviving blueberry bush - again from focus for 20p - it was originally a stick in a bucket so glad to see it with a bit of life again!

I am awaiting the arrival of a compost bin too that the council offered relatively cheap as a recycling scheme so that should arrive anyday too.

Fingers crossed I will be able to go ahead with my planting this coming year but can anyone else advise me on things I could be doing in preparation? I haven't really picked out a veg plot yet as im not too sure where to put it as I have two children (7 and 1) and I have a small terrier dog.

I cannot wait to start getting myself more self sufficient. Im hoping to also get a water butt asap too!

Oh and did I mention my new house has a lovely big kitchen diner for my to play in.

Inside the house pictures to follow soon!

This is not too far removed from what my cupboard looks like which is kind of scary!

Right, I have taken an itinerary of my fridge / freezer and cupboards. Their contents are as followed.

  • Mushrooms
  • 3 x petite filous yogurts
  • I Cant Believe Its Not Butter
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 and a half bags of grated mature cheddar
  • New Potatoes

  • 1 home-pride pasta bake sauce
  • 1 home-pride curry sauce
  • Bisto Gravy Granules
  • 23 Chicken Oxo cubes

  • 500g sugar
  • 1 tin of 8 hotdogs in brine
  • 4 tins of Lentil Soup

  • 4 satsumas

and that is what is currently edible in my humble abode!

I have £5 to last me until the 10th and today is currently the 2nd.

My little boy starts school tomorrow so I will have to take out and defrost the small loaf in the freezer to put with cheese for his sandwiches, along with a bag of crisps, some dried apricots, a banana and a yogurt!

Plus I think I will have a day cooking tomorrow and peel some of the new potatoes and some carrots and cook them up and blend them once cooled to make a basis for baby food for Holly. That way then I can either just warm it up and give it to her or add an oxo cube or a little bit of gravy to it for a change and freeze a few portions. Plus I will get making twinks* hobnobs too as an energy bar for my partner when hes training and as a snack for my sons lunch box.

Well looks like I'll be having a productive day tomorrow around the errands, cleaning, washing, looking after Holly and the school run!

******************************
*Twinks - in case your wondering are hobnob style biscuits. The recipe was added to the MSE forum by a dear member who's username is 'Twink' therefore they have taken the name 'Twinks Hobnobs'. The recipe for those wanting to try them is

Hobnob Recipe

Ingredients

8oz sr flour
8oz sugar
8oz porridge oats
8oz margarine
1tbsp golden syrup
1tbsp hot water
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Instructions

Mix the flour, oats and sugar, melt marg, syrup and water in a pan. Stir in bic soda and add to dry mix.

Then mix well and make into smallish balls which you then put on a greased tray and flatten slightly with a fork. Put in the oven at 180 degrees C for 15 mins... and cool on the tray. The aim is to get them golden in the oven not brown.

"It pays to plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark."

I figured the above quote made a good point. With the climate as it is, none of us can ever be too prepared and I realise lately that I have fallen off the money saving/ Old style/ planning ahead band wagon and I desperately need to get back on it.

The future will hopefully see us getting a house and with that obviously we will have rent increases as I have mentioned in a previous entry and I don't simply mean it will increase by £10 , I mean it will increase by upwards of £60 a month and another £10 a month on our water rates and as me and my partner currently work we are not entitled to extra help with benefits.

Therefore I need to get our food spend under control and back in order. Some readers may remember back in January 2008 I wrote a post on MSE (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=697339&highlight=100) about feeding my family for £100 a month. At that time my family consisted of myself, my partner, our son Benjamin was 3 and we had Bruno our Jack Russell.

Now my family consists of myself, my partner, Benjamin is now an active (almost) 7 year old, Our baby girl Holly is (almost 10 months), Our Jack Russell Bruno is now 8 years old and 2 terrapins called Randy and Toby.
So needless to say I have to look at increasing our food budget somewhat but I'm hoping I will be able to keep to £150 a month.

So I will take stock of fridge/freezer/cupboard contents etc and repost my plan of action.

Proud Mummy moment

I was sent a load of photographs the other day which really cheered me up from a local
community worker and fundraisers

I moved to Cwmafan roughly 7 years ago when I was pregnant with my son and despite being an employee in the local main shop ~ I am known by residents here. I was worried however that my son would maybe be treated as a bit of an outsider as we weren't from Cwmafan ourselves despite him being born down the road in Port Talbot Hospital and living in Cwmafan all his life.

However these photos have cheered me up and made me realise just how much he does for his little community so I thought I would share them with you.

He was planting daffodil bulbs with his school mates throughout th
e community to make the village prettier (he is on the far left holding the shovel)

He took part in the local fun run to raise funds for the his rugby team and community. Here he is below with his friends from L - R ~ Jack, Levi, Matthew and Benjamin

Here he is with all the other kids who took part (he's front row bottom left)

He is goalkeeper for the Cwmafan Under 7's football team although plays as Number 11 not number 1.

He also plays as Number 11 on the Cwmafan Under 7's Rugby team in which they play tag rugby and he was given the 'tagger of the match' award.

So all in all Im a very proud mummy. = ) I'm hoping that Holly will be as involved with the community as he is.

Bike Riding ~ Day one

Right well the time has come and I decided to teach Benjamin how to ride his bike

He got his bike without stabilizers for his birthday back in May 2010 but I was heavily pregnant and couldn't really manage to teach him with an 8 month old bump incubating in the way!

Needless to say Owen has no patience after the first attempt and several swear words and various threats to sell it/throw it in the river/take it back to the shop it now rests in Mummy's hands to teach him.

Should reiterate that he has had a bike before which was a hand me down from his brother Josh which Josh rode all of about 3 times, and shrieked like a girl every time before falling off it and refusing to ever touch it again. But Ben use to love it and would fly along happily on it until he sadly out grew it.

I have now put stabilizers on Benjamin's bike and he was much more confident with one little wobble so I think I will take them off soon and hopefully he should be attempting some proper riding soon.

I take him over the piggery (or up the line) depending on who you speak to in teh village ~ its basically a little walk which has recently been retarmaced and is a top spot for cyclists, joggers and dog walkers as it is secluded, very pretty, away from lots of roads and in general just a nice quiet
and peaceful walk.

It is also home to the Cwmafan Portrait Bench which has our local heroes Richard Burton, Rob Brydon and Afan Forest Park Ranger,Dick Wagstaff.

He thoroughly enjoyed himself and so did mummy - nice to be active again as last time I tried to teach him I had a bump in the way!

x

Also discovered that I seem to have two very fertile spider plants.

Considering last year I couldn't find a spider plant for love nor money - when I saw Wilkinsons had them I treated myself.
But by the time I got back to the shop there was two poor looking ones glaring at me to be taken home, so jumped at the chance and nabbed them for £1 each due to them being half dead.

Now one is on my kitchen windowsill (Fred as Benjamin has dubbed him) and he has one shoot coming up which is about 6 inches long now and Thomas who sits on my bathroom window has a giant shoot thats about 12 - 15 inches long and another one thats about 5 inches!

Only problem is ~
I've no idea how to go about trimming/repotting or growing them on etc!

But am pretty sure I will soon have an abundance of spider plants if they keep growing at this rate! Pictures to follow shortly

My newest ~ experimental ~ challenge!

As most of you know by now I work for a well known supermarket branch.

But I have become absolutely mortified lately at the stuff my shop has been getting rid of - the piles of waste is just simply ridiculous!

We had 38 multipack bags (6 bags in a bag) of Walkers crisps wasted a few weeks ago because they were a week over their sell by date. So we opened one packet, sampled them and offered customers one to taste - explained that they were slightly out of date and gave 20 of them away rather than bin them so I am setting myself a challenge.

I am going to ATTEMPT until my next pay (bar bread/milk/babys stuff - ie nappies/milk and juice) live off the shops reduced sections and my cupboards - now I havent done a big shop this month so have a few basics in like tins and pasta but my fridge and freezer are almost empty bar a few straddling bits and pieces.

So as far as I'm concerned the reduced section will cover me for meat and vegetables basically with the rest being baked or used up form my cupboards/stock ~ which by the way isn't a great deal and my next pay day isn't until the 19th May.

I mean for obvious reasons I wont scrimp on Holly's things as she's only 9 months old but instead of jars she will be getting things home-made now and Benjamin gets a very upset stomach from the cheaper juice so for that I will stick to Mr T's brand one but everything else will be reduced section items.

I'm hoping in theory this will
a) help me to get back in the kitchen and make meals as I've been severely slacking recently
b) help me with meal experimenting and trying new recipes
c)help me save money
d)help me get back in shape as I have to walk at least half hour to get to Mr T

Also if you fancy a similiar challenge or any help with food waste then please visit this site

I will make a list of cupboard / freezer / fridge contents and post them and I'll see how I manage for this next month!

Wheres the passion?

This is taking part this weekend in Port Talbot. Mr Michael Sheen OBE has returned to his home town of Port Talbot to take part in an open-air play with a cast of more than 1,000.
It is taking over the streets of Port Talbot for the next three days.
Passion plays developed to tell the story of the trial suffering and death of Jesus Christ.

Sheen, known for his portrayals of public figures including Tony Blair and David Frost, has said he was inspired by the community spirit of the passion plays he watched at Margam Park as a youngster.

This was Day One and it began at dawn,
Below ~ This is Sheens character of a teacher being baptised by a stranger, as the sun rises over Aberavon Sea Front in Port Talbot

Below ~ Thousands made their way to the seafront to see 'the arrival' which was the official start to the play.

Below ~ This is the second day and the first sighting of Mr Sheen hidden in the crowd.
Below ~ This is when Sheens Character is identified in the crowd as a leader of the people.

The play is set to continue tonight with Sheen eating his 'last supper' of beer and sandwiches at a social club where the Manic Street Preachers will perform.
He will then be taken to a police cell before a 'crucifixion' on a roundabout on Easter Sunday.

got plain milk?

I was just hoping to give a quick shout out to 'The Milk Revolution' Blog that has been started by Mrs. Swelander (http://www.blogger.com/profile/00854835773544246798 ) on behalf of her grade four class.

This blog is a follow on from Jamie Oliver petitioning to get plain milk back on the school menu in the US where they are served chocolate or strawberry milk for breakfast and lunch - Just one glass of which contains 4 teaspoons of sugar. That's almost 2 gallons of extra sugar A YEAR

If you are based in the USA and would like to support Jamie's petition please follow the below link

Many Thanks.

I've woken up this morning with a renewed look on my lifestyle after a very disturbing dream. In my dream, I had ended up homeless with the kids and with no way of providing for myself, until I came across a tomato (I hate tomatoes) seed packet and planted them in a park where no one could find them and they provided for us. Rather bizarre I know and no idea where on earth that came from but still.........
I now am deciding that I want to start making my dreams a reality and therefore am now planning for my little families future.

We are still hoping for a house to come up for us - we know of at least 2 3 bedroomed houses that are coming up in our next bidding booklet so we are hoping upon hope that we will be lucky....but we also know that with added space (ie a third bedroom) comes the added rent and water bill. So I have been looking at ways to lessen the blow for us when it eventually happens and starting to plan in advance little things that will help us out.

If we have sufficient space the dog will have his own 'garden' as being a Jack Russell anything that he can get hold of is either destroyed, eaten or dug up. I'm hoping then that I will be able to find the best sun trap and make myself a small vegetable plot - space permitting obviously but Ben's school recently contacted a local farmer who donated his used tractor tyres to the school for them to use as planters where they are currently growing tomato plants so I wonder if that could be a cheap option as well as a weird feature in a back garden - not to mention a handy seat as well i guess. Ideally I would have a few fruit bushes and hanging baskets too.

Also another thing that crossed my mind was watering these plants - but whilst I do live in Wales - near the coast and in a valley too I might add - I think a water butt would still be a money conscious buy. It could also come in handy for car/motorbike/mountain bike washing as well as bathing the dog and filling up a bird bath. Which reminds me - Benjamin has asked if we have a garden if we can have a bird bath and bird table so he can look after the birds. Cant really deny his caring instinct - especially as he wants to be a zoo keeper or a vet when he's older.

Saying that I think 95% of the councils gardens are a rectangular shape so I can draw a rough plan of what my mini garden will look like so I will plan that quickly then I can have a basic idea of what Im working with.

I shall return with my sketch......

Wow - have been away

Well its glorious sunshine here in South Wales today and I am..........stuck indoors as Benjamin has picked up some sort of tummy bug along with 3 of his rugby co stars!
Oh should mention my son is now a sportsman at 6 years old as a rugby star (training on a Monday, match on a Sunday) and footballer (training thursday, match on a saturday) which is leaving mummy suitably shattered being that she also has returned to work and now does a Wednesday night 5- 10, and a sunday 3 - 10. Not to mention the added fun of three main birthdays coming up so attempting to money save and a almost crawling 9 month old! YES I said 9 MONTH old! Didn't that go bleeding quick!

Here is Minnie enjoying her food

As for recent months - all seems to be ok. Owen has had some good news about his eye and is now on every 6 month visits, my sister had her surgery and they successfully removed all the cells so she is on regular smear tests fro the foreseeable future. I had the all clear sign off after abnormal results so I'm now free until 2014. The HV from hell has finally left us alone - which reminds me I should go to clinic at some point to see her though for a general check up and weigh in. Money has sort of lapsed though due to me restarting work but we are doing much better since our debt free help before Christmas with my win.

Which reminds me - winnings.
I have so far since I started comping in November won
  1. £5000 cash
  2. 37" LCD TV
  3. an XBOX 360
  4. a Kinect for the XBOX 360
  5. 2 Kinect Games
  6. 1 Nintendo DSi
  7. 2 Nintendo DSi games
  8. 2 front row tickets to Britains Got Talent Auditions
  9. Pocket Trivia Pursuit Game
  10. 2 giant moshi monsters teddies
  11. 2 small moshi monsters teddies
  12. 2 moshi monsters books
  13. 1 mini pack of moshlings
  14. 3 childrens books (series - fantasy thing cant remember)
  15. 1 flat stanley book
  16. 1 DVD - Despicable Me
  17. 1 22" LCD TV/DVD Combi
  18. 1 Dr Who Tardis mug with lid
  19. 1 Dr Who Projector Torch
  20. 1 Carbon Monoxide alarm

so all in all not bad for 5 months worth of competitions! So needless to say I am frequenting the competition boards at the minute. Plus as I am writing this the projector torch has just arrived so I have a happy little Benjamin being that he's off school poorly today.
Oh and we have a second win today - two tickets to the cinema as a runners up prize too. Bargain ~ think Mummys good luck is wearing off on him

Really do need to get a hang of finances again though as recent spending has gotten out of hand over Christmas and I seem to be putting weight back on again which I'm very unamused about. Even stupider really being that Owen's £750 mountain bike is sat in the spare room doing fudge all and has done for about 1yr+ - really think I should start making a point of an evening bike ride - plus it will help me de-stress a bit too I think.

Other than that myself and my little brood are all ok. Abby my sister si still convinced she is going to move to America to be with her USA boyfriend - yes the same one who dumped her when he found out she had cervical cancer - but she wont listen.

oh and still no sign of a house.

I hope to be back with you more now!

Saturday, 12 February 2011

Well figured whilst I was posting my updates I would also give a general update.

1. Have my new washing machine - woohoo!

2. My sister is making a good recovery - she has to go back in 6 months but the surgeon was pretty sure they removed a substantial enough amount of her cervix that they have all the cells.

3. My paralyzed friend is home now and recovering and now has her grandparents staying with her which means I am off children/dog sitting duties.

and relax.....................

(and Yes this is my little princess Holly May snoozing)

My day today however has most consisted of bill planning, food planning and football.

Whilst sitting making a list of the bills to pay, how much I needed to pay etc I have realized that I can now after my win last year and becoming debt free afford to start saving.
So once
*all bills paid
*£20 debt repaid to my mum
*£30 extra which was owed to DenPlan
*£20 treat for myself
*£70 into my savings account with the credit union

I am left with the grand total of £130!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have decided though that £70 will be budgeted aside to give my little boy Benjie's room an update.

Let me explain first - when we moved in his room was already decorated from the previous tenant as Winnie the pooh - 3 pale yellow walls with a border and stick around and one wallpapered wall, which was cute when he was 1 year old ~ but now hes 7 and not so much a baby as a little boy.

BUT..............

I don't want to go mad redecorating as we want to move to a house soon and so don't want to spend a fortune because sods law says we'll move if we did that but I have decided to update it to a Sponge-Bob bedroom so I have found

* Buy One Get One Free on pale blue bedding (him and his brother are in bunk beds) £14.99
* Sponge bob border x 3 --- £22.41
* Stick a rounds (33 stickers per pack) --- £10.99
* Dulux 'First Dawn' Blue Paint - £16.99 9but will see if Wilko/Focus do their own version cheaper

Total : £65.50 (for sake of argument!) and he'll have a big boys bedroom. I already have a blue lampshade, his curtains are pale green which is in the border, and his carpet is purple which is also in the border.
So I decided to budget £70 and then if things can be gotten cheaper or on offer then I'll put any left into his savings account.

Plus I'll still have £60 thats 'spare' money.

Just need Holly to be good now so I can get it done!

Will make sure to post before and after pictures too!

Right, my revelation for the day.......

Whilst tidying and reorganizing my bedroom I have discovered a box of books that I had stored away carefully but came to the realization I had never read.

So I have decided to start reading the books that I have being that they are just gathering dust now and I figure I can expand my literacy ability and my literature knowledge being that Ive only read books really as coursework other than biographies.

So so far the books I have dusted and unearthed if you like from the black hole that is under my bed are

Love Sets You Free (The Autobiography of Janni Kowalski)

Through Thick and Thin (The Autobiography of Gok Wan)

The Lake By Richard Laymon

James Toseland (James Toselands autobiography)

Charley and Ewan - The Long Way Down

Charley Boorman - Race To Dakar

Ok so I know most of those are autobiographies but I would like to read some well known novels to so if anyone has any good suggestions then please feel free to leave them in a comment below - one book Ive never read is 'to kill a mockingbird' or 'little women' so I will have those in my 'to read' list but if anyone has any other suggestions then I would love to hear them.
